Sylvester Conrad was a guest Christmas Day of Roy and Phyllis Conrad. 
 
Thanks to Roy Conrad and Sean Peters for removing the snow in and around the McCracken Community building; to Mitchell Jacobs for his four wheeler with a snow plow to get ready for the soup supper.
 
Arkie and Diana McNair and Charlotte Ochs returned home Monday from spending Christmas in Colorado with their family.  They were guests of Travis McNair and family and Curtis McNair and family.  They enjoyed cooking and making cookies.  On the way back to Kansas they stopped at Deer Trail and Charlotte Ochs visited with her friend Helen. 
 
McCracken increased their population by one this past Friday. . . .a baby boy was born to Don and Lynnette Doornbos at 1:17 December 28, 1007.  He weighed 7 lbs, 3 oz and was 21 inches long and has been named John Warren.  Congratulations.  Taylor Doornbos went on vacation this past week with Grandpa Tony Harp and Uncle Butch Harp to Kansas City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  They attended the baptism for Dylan Harp, son of Michael and Jen Harp. 
 
Sunday, December 23rd, Gladys and Wendell Hinman were guests of Greg and Sheila Hinman, Lewis.  Additional guests were Jeannie and Casey Grimme and Conner, Spring, TX; Jessica Hinman, Hays; Jeff Hinman, Luray; Laura and Ray Wierman, Bennington; Jill Herschbach, Salina and Cindy Wierman, Olathe.

Gladys & Wendell Hinman spent Christmas Eve with Tonya & Wade Hinman, Coty & Zaccary in Kansas City. On Christmas Day all were guests of Ellen & Larry Hinman, Cheryl & Sarah, Lenexa.
 
 Shari Funk, Bob and Marlene Funk, Lorraine and Glen Ryan enjoyed Christmas with Babe and Arlene Gilbert.  Brett, Holly, Haily, Courtney and Erica (Rachel Rae) had Christmas dinner at Grandma and Grandpa Kroegers (Shirley & Shorty) in Ellis.
 
Paula Corte spent Wednesday – Saturday in McCracken.  She visited with her uncle Francis Zeller who is a patient at Hays Medical Center, Hays.
 
Shannon and Donna McKinney, NC and Dennis Polland, Hoisington, visited friends in McCracken last week.  They were good Samaritans as they shoveled the driveway for Joann Micheli.
 
Rhonda and Neal Allen, Chandler and Ashleigh, were weekend guests of her parents, Roy and Phyllis Conrad. They all attended the soup supper held Saturday evening at the Community Center.
 
Greg and Beverly Buster were in Las Vegas with their son Riley for the holidays.  Greg said “A guy can't seem to hide out anywhere as we were playing games in the Mandalay Bay casino when somebody said "hey Greg."  It was Don Irvin and his wife Dena, Jay and Maureen Georg and several other couples I did not know.  (Kathy and Fred Felder, Lee Showalter and Barbara Ham). The odds of seeing anyone you know in LV are great and the odds of seeing anyone from the McCracken area are astronomical.

Rich and Mary Lou Higgins were guests of his parents, Twila and Wilfrid Higgins and attended the soup supper held at the Community Building. 

John and Sharon Irvin, Kayla Irvin, Lance and Jesse Irvin enjoyed supper at Applebee’s Sunday evening celebrating the birthdays of Vicky Overley and Sally Irvin.
 
Sarena Higgins and Phyllis Higgins spent Christmas in Cedar Rapids, IA with Ron, Sabrina and Sam Hurt.
 
The musical group ‘The Heat’ was featured in a magazine in Holland with a review of their new CDs. This band played in McCracken at a high school dance, either winter homecoming or prom in 1983.  Some of the band members then were Tony and Tim Pfeifer and Fulton Calvary.  You may check out their website www.tonegroup.com.
 
Chuck Higgins and Zach, Tammy Irvin and Cameron attended the 7th & 8th grade B team tournament held in Sterling on Saturday.  Tanner Higgins is a member of the team which placed first.
 
Freddie and Kim Taylor and family, Rod and Bernadette Taylor and family, Kelly and Sandy Beisner and family, Randy and Denise Taylor and family were Christmas guests of their parents, Fred and Mary Anne Taylor.
 
Carla Dorsey, granddaughter of Carl and Velma Legleiter, recently graduated from Southern Nazarene University with a MAMFT – Master of Arts in Martial & Family Therapy.  Her goal is to be a LPC – Licensed Professional Counsel and/or a LADC – Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor which she will receive when she completes her required hours.
 
Priscilla Jacobs, Mitchell Jacobs, Terri Lasater and grandkids Anton and Kaden Foust, celebrated New Year’s with Neal and Amy Jacobs, Jaden and Tessa in Wichita. They also celebrated Jaden’s 21st birthday on December 31.
 
Johnny and Virgil Brengarth, and friend Barry joined Roy and Kathleen Langdon and John Langdon this past weekend in McCracken and did some hunting.  They too attended the community soup supper.

Roger and Norma McNair accompanied Diana and Arkie McNair to Denver where they spent Christmas with Tammy McNair.  They also spent a couple of days with Barbara DeJean.  Morgan Schultz, Cory Molloy, Jamie and Dallas DeWitt, Mason and Hunter spent Christmas in Topeka.

Danny and Pat Petz celebrated their 37th anniversary by going to the Guitterrez restaurant of Hays on January 2.

On Saturday evening, Danny and Pat Petz were guests of Kelly and Melanie Petz and family of Hays as they celebrated Christmas with Melanie and Kameron.  Kameron enjoyed the gifts that he received from grandma and grandpa after an extended stay in the Hays
 
Thanks everyone who attended the Mass on Saturday, Dec. 29 here at St. Mary's of McCracken. Thanks for Father Kraus for coming down again.  For our fine organist, Miss Katie Showalter the daughter of Adam and Janice Showalter as well as Emma Showalter who helped serve mass along with Brianna Casey the daughter of Jerry and Karen Casey.  DeAnna Bergquist as Lector and also Carolyn Thompson to help give out wine.  For Twila Higgins helping decorate the Church and also Bet McCormick and Bill Greenway for snow removal in the church parking.  Those taking up the collection – Bet McCormick, Hoop Higgins, Francis Wierman and Roy Conrad and gifts, Roy and Phyllis Conrad.  The soup supper following was enjoyed by all.  I hear the noodle, potato, cheese soup was outstanding, but there were three others equal to it. 
 
Our sympathy to the family of Luceil Plotner, 88, who died Janury 3, 2008, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hosington.  She was born December 27, 1919 in McCracken to Ralph Monroe and Martha (Schlegel) Plotner.  She was a retired personnel worker for the U. S. Government in Washington, D. C.  She was a U. S. Navy veteran serving in World War 11.  Survivors include her sister, Evelyn Higgins, Hoisington.  Burial was in McCracken with flag presentation by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7428 and American Legion Post No. 286.
 
Congratulations to Adam and Mindy Brenner on the birth of a son, Braden Joseph Brenner on December 1, 2007.  Grandparents are Larry and Kathy Brenner, Hays.  Great-grandfather, Earl Brenner, Hays.
 
Congratulations to Manuel and Erin Hernandez, Damar, on the birth of a son Dominic Moises Hernandez.  He was born November 19, 2007.  Grandparents are Len and Linda Schamber, Damar and Juan Manuel and Guadalupe Hernandez, Mexico City.
 
McCracken History Notes
January 1908
 
A box supper will be given at the Hanson school five miles southwest of McCracken on Saturday evening.  Miss Ada North, teacher.
 
Mr. James Start had a family reunion at his home south of town Tuesday in honor of his sixty-first birthday.  His four sons, Robert, Frank, Al and Charles and Mr. and Mrs. Will Lovitt were present, together with the families of all of them and an enjoyable time was had.  An elaborate dinner was served and a nice present given by the sons befitting the occasion.
 
January 1938
Last Friday night McCracken and Bison divided victories, McCracken girls winning 30-14 and Bison boys 44-26.  The girl’s fray turned into a free-for-all which resulted in minor injuries.
 
The pupils in the first and second grades who had perfect attendance during the month of December were Johnny Elmore, James Higgins, Joan Ryan, Don Smith, Uberta Warta, Maxine Moses, Bill Joe Moran, Shirley Sperry, Alice and Scotty Weesner, Calvin Wilson and Glenda Pedigo.

Farmers Telephone Company announced new monthly rates.  Business telephones, 1-party, $2.75; 2-party, $2.50; residence telephones, l and 2-party, $2.00; multi-party in towns, $1.85; rural $1.85.
 
The McCracken Post Office had $643.90 in receipts in December.
 
Rudolph J. Walter, Jr. was named as the construction engineer to build Cedar Bluff Dam.  He comes from constructing the dam at Elephant Butte, New Mexico.  The reservoir will have a capacity of 353,200 acre-feet.  Total cost will be nineteen million.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Holden of Ness City, formerly of McCracken, a son, Jerome Daniel, on Sunday, January 4, in the Ransom hospital.
 
January 1958
The King Mason family have moved here from Longton and purchased the Alex Graff property.
 
Two fires caused damage in McCracken this week.  Flames destroyed the Rodney Milling grain elevator, a garage and caused considerable damage to other buildings; the second fire originated in the garage at the Assembly of God parsonage and completely destroyed the garage, car and did extensive damage to the roof of the parsonage.

Richard Shiney has been elected assistant Vice-President of the First National Bank of Topeka.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Lewie Crawford were winners of the Bankers Award for completing soil conservation practices.
 
MHS has two students serving the Neighborhood Youth Corps in a work training program, Marie Rourke and Wayne Johnston.
 
January 1978
Lester Doerr of Vallejo, California, visited the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial and saw the names of area servicemen who lost their lives or were missing in action in the South Pacific.
 
Athenian Club officers are Joan Buster, B. J. Baus, Velma Legleiter and Rose Showalter.
 
In the girl’s game with Pawnee Heights, Kerri Derr had 10 points.
 
January 1988
Anna Hattie Ree Foster, 96, died January 4, 1988 at De Leon, Texas hospital.  She had been a resident of Texas for ten years having moved from McCracken.  She was born July 6, 1891 in Rush county.  She married William F. Foster, April 7, 1919 in Lamar, Colorado.  He died April 9, 1961.  She was a homemaker.  Survivors include two daughters, Arietta Ann Plaunty and Bonnie Hammett.  She was preceded in death by a son Doyle F. (Freddie) Foster.  Burial was in the McCracken City Cemetery.
 
January 1998
Roxene Fletcher Kaltenbaugh was promoted to Director of Rehabilitative Services at Eastern State Hospital in Oklahoma.
 
Arlene Rues and Rosie Diehl came on Friday to attend the funeral of King Mason.
