Eric Hurd, a high school senior and son of Jeff and Kathy Hurd, is interning at Northrop Grumman, which is the second largest defense contractor in the nation. Northrop Grumman reaches out into Southern California school districts each year to offer internship opportunities through a program called the High School Involvement Partnership, or HIP for short. HIP provides a choice of over twenty different jobs. One of Eric’s friends is learning about an unmanned helicopter called Global Hawk, which is already used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eric will be working on the X-47b, also known as the UCAS, an aircraft carrier based, unmanned combat air vehicle. It looks like a slightly smaller version of the B-2 Stealth Bomber.

He did a US Navy SEAL fitness challenge at Coronado High School, on Coronado Island.  This consisted of a 500 meter swim - breast stroke style, pull-ups and pushups for 2 minutes, sit-ups for 2 minutes and a 1.5 mile run.  He wrote that this was one of the hardest workouts he had ever done. It was for high school water polo players who had been training for the challenge. Eric and Austin are the grandsons of Bill and Sharon Lovitt.
