Don and Lynnette Doornbos hosted Christmas for all the Harp's and Kinderknecht's on Saturday. They welcomed 23 family members for a day of food, fun, and lots of presents for little boys and girls.
Christmas Eve guests at the home of Frank & Dorothy Kershner were Bruce, Ellen, Clinton, Clayton & Addie Kershner, Kurt, Laura & Kassie Pechanec, Garrett McCormick and Cheryl Summers.
Christmas Day guests of Bruce & Ellen Kershner & kids were Grandpa Bob House, Grandpa Frank & Grandma Dorothy Kershner, and Aunt Cheryl Summers.
Babe and Arlene Gilbert were Christmas guests of Bob and Marlene Funk in Wakeeney. They took a ham this trip!
Midge Davenport celebrated her 96th birthday on December 12th at the Mennonite Manor with family and friends.
Caitlin Prinzo and her friend Nathan stopped by Christmas morning before they went back to Weatherford for school. It was nice visiting with them for a minute.
Ty, Tina, and Quintin Elias were guests of Dave and Carolyn Davenport, Hutchinson for a few days. Quintin and Grandma went to see the movie, Yogi Bear and on Monday evening they went to the YMCA for a swim.
Willard Everett Mills, 89, Marion, Kansas died at his home on December 23, 2010. He was born May 18, 1921 at Alexander, Kansas, the son of Raymond Guy and Lydia Louella Miller Millls on a farm near Alexander. He graduated from McCracken High School in 1939 and worked for area farmers before he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in Pueblo, Colorado, June, 1942. During the next year he trained in radio, radar and diesel mechanics in Missouri, Florida, Texas and California before being sent to Alaska for two years where he served in Anchorage and Shemya. Willard received an honorable discharge from the 2528th Army Air Forces Base Unit in Amarillo, Texas on October 31, 1945. Following his military service, he managed the McCracken Farmers Coop grain elevator of which his grandfather helped establish in 1916 or 1917. Willard married Mildred Glee Temple, daughter of Basil and Esda Temple of McCracken, January 7, 1947. This union was blessed with four children: James Robert, Linda Marlene Shirk, Peggy Jo Bacon and David Lee. In 1951 Willard purchased a farm southeast of Moran and began farming his own land. Willard was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers; Raymond, Cecil and Leonard. He is survived by his wife and children, 16 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren; one brother Kenneth Mills and wife Opal Jean.
Marty and Addie Mills; Richard Mills, Clark, South Dakota; Tom Mills, Suzie and Skyler, Louisiana joined the Willard Mills family on Monday morning at the United Methodist Church in Elmore, Kansas for Willards funeral services.
Eric and Melissa Davis and Chris (Toast) spent Christmas Eve together, then Christmas Day Eric, Melissa, Bruce & Sue Davis and Sassy traveled to Hutchinson to the spend the day with Brian and Lisa Davis, Madison, Hunter and Landon. That afternoon Eric and Melissa motored to Coffeville to spend Christmas night with her family.

Christmas dinner guests of Roy & Phyllis Conrad. On Sunday Roy and Phyllis
traveled to Spearville and were dinner guests of Chris & Rhonda Zordel. Also
attending was John, Jennifer & Sammy Droste, Colorado, Brendan Neeley, of
Wyoming and Joanna Neeley, daughter of Chris and Rhonda and Albert and Louise Zordel.
St, Mary's Heritage Association was happy to see all the wonderful
parishioners and out-of town visitors for our mass on Saturday, Jan 1. The mass was said in memory of Hugo and Alice Krause. Helping to make the mass possible, especially Rev. Father Kraus for officiating were Josh Moran as server; DeAnna Bergquist for leading the Rosary and for being lector; Wilfrid & Twila Higgins gifts, Marge Moran and Carolyn Thompson for communion; Katie Showalter organist, Emma Showalter, Janice Showalter & Michele Moran for leading the singing, Sylvester McCormick and Roy Conrad ushers and Marge Moran for helping set up mass before and after. All was very much appreciated.
Rev. Father David Kraus was a guest of Roy and Phyllis Conrad after mass at Boondocks Café Saturday evening. The bacon wrapped shrimp was great.
The McCracken Museum was given on loan a cane/sword from Roy Langdon. The cane was given to his grandfather, Roy Langdon from Frank Start. It is made of hickory wood and Roy told me his grandfather was nick-named Hickory. I thought it was extra neat as Frank Start was my great uncle.
The city of Otis had the nicest Christmas decorations down their Main Street. Very pretty. (Shirley)
Lonnie Irvin returned home last Thursday after under going hip surgery at the Hays Medical Center. He is doing well.
Melanie Zeller returned home this week after back surgery at the Hays Medical Center.
McCracken Alumni has purchased 4 electric ovens for the Community Center and gave a donation to the City to purchase candy for Santa.
Bet and Jeanette McCormick went to Tulsa, Oklahoma to celebrate Christmas with Melody Kelly and Chezney and Angela and Michelle Langer, Wednesday and Thursday after Christmas.
Priscilla Jacobs accompanied Jean Schutte to Goddard where she spent Christmas with Neal, Amy, Jaden and Tessa Jacobs. Jean went to Garden Plain.
Georgia Lytle spent Christmas with her family in Smith Center; her daughter, Sharon Lytle, Melia and Jamee; her son Wesley and Mattie Lytle, Jesse, Brayden and Dajon. She also visited with her dad, James Higby, who was in the hospital.
Christmas eve guests of Pat Derr were Debbie Rogers, Jennifer Rogers, Valerie and Kevin Anderson and family, Layne and Kerrie Morgan, Katlyn and Angela; Dave, Derek and Carly Derr; Leonard Anderson, Ron Johnson, Emily and Scott Keener.
Curly Juvenal says he is going to try and make it back for the alumni/rodeo weekend.
Thayne and Machree Jones spent a few days after Christmas in Wichita with their son, Chris and Tessa Jones and Ethan.
News from the Roz (Moran) and Del Bethke home: Their children - JoLynn and husband Adam live in Denver where Jolynn works for Newmont Mining Corporation, a gold-mining company at its corporate tech center, Patrick works as a junior analyst for Citi Bank; and Adam is a systems engineer at Time-Warner Cable. Del is a custom programmer and Roz is teaching in the Communications Division at Johnson County Community College. The big news is that Dan and Jess adopted four children in February. They are JaNasjia, 10; Jaden, 3; Dae Mario, 6 and Drew, 19 months. They live in Los Angeles. Del and Roz hosted Christmas for JoLynn, Adam, Patrick, his girfriend Kylee and Aunt Jean Moran.
Ardyth Anderson Johnson has moved into an assisted living community in Aurora, Colorado. They play bingo, do crafts and go on outings.
Ruby Myers spent eleven days in the hospital. Our best wishes for the new year.
Mildred Liebold, Father Russell Simms sister, is still living in Fort Myers, Florida. She says it has been so cold there lately and many lost their crops.
Our pen pal in Manning, Alberta, Canada, writes that they have to travel to town to get drinking water. They must purchase all their drinking water as the officials have closed the municipal water supply in the farm area as it is not safe to drink due to wild birds and animals using it. It is busy on their farm. They have hauled 252 loads of hay this fall to feed their 800-900 head of cattle.
Judy Hinman, Albuquerque, went to Abilene, Texas for Christmas with her daughter, Jan and grandsons, Marcus and Andrew. Her daughter Robin and Robins adopted daughter Melissa spend a lot of time with her Judy also helps out at Melissas school a couple of days a week.
Rev. Leonard Goosen writes that health wise he is doing O.K., but energy wise he has slowed down a lot. He and Donita live in Ellinwood.
Our sympathy to the family of Kenneth A. Hearting, 90, WaKeeney, who died December 25 at WaKeeney. He was born near Brownell on December 19, 1920 to Lewis and Ida Wagoner Hearting. He married Carol Sunley on May 11, 1940 at Dighton. He owned and operated K-Hearting Amusement in WaKeeney for 60 years. He came often to McCracken to work on machines. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Russell, Richard and Duane and two daughters, Margaret Wahlborg and Barbara Richter; a sister, Dorine Sherill, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Burial was in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.
Jean Schutte spent Christmas with Jim and Shelly McCormick and the rest of the McCormick family at Garden Plain.
Marge Moran, Michele Moran, Jason Moran, David, Stacy, Nick, Zach and Abby Moran, John, Ellen and Josh Moran, Clark, Nicole and Maddy Kirk attended mass on New Years Eve at Timken. The mass was for Bill Moran.
They spent the weekend celebrating Christmas at the home of Marge Moran.
My sympathy to the family of Theresa Schaffer, 90, Liebenthal, who died December 24, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. She married Julian Schaffer on June 20, 1939 in Liebenthal. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. She is survived by, sons, Patrick and Robert Schaffer and daughters, Judy Kraemer and Edith Bollig. Edith and I worked together many years ago. CT
Larry and Melody Higgins, Riverton, Wyoming, were pre-Christmas visitors of Wilfrid and Twila Higgins on Thursday and Friday. Also visiting were Michelle and her fiancé Mike from Grand Island, Nebraska.
Our sympathy to the family of William Harold Schultz, 93, Hays, who died December 21 in a car accident. Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl Schilowsky and husband Emery, Grand Island, Neb. and Bernadine Schultz, McCracken. He was born in Woodston in 1917 to William and Ruby (Turner) Schultz. He graduated from Woodston High School. He was a trap shooting enthusiast for over 60 years. He was cremated and there were no services.
Christmas weekend guests of Wilfrid and Twila Higgins were Mike and Nancy Wiebe, Blue Springs, Missouri; Rich and Mary Lou Higgins and Cody, Lakin; Doug and Mary Higgins, Lyons; Brett Higgins, Dallas, Texas; Danielle Higgins, Dez and Dev, Wichita; and Jeremy and Ashley Higgins, Olathe.
Casey Brown was home on leave to visit his mother, Cecilia Gilbert and his sister, Sheila Brown. He will be stationed in San Diego in the Navy.
As a follow-up to my article last week about returning the Capital to Lecompton, the officers at Lecompton hope to have the Kansas House meet in the Territorial capital Museum (a National Register side where President Dwight Eisenhowers parents were married). The Kansas Senate could meet in Constitution Hall, a National landmark and a Kansas State Historical Site. Legislative members could ride in on horseback and wear period clothing. We will keep you informed if the Legislature approves of this event.

The high school looks forward to getting into the new building. The heating plant is the best on the market and the ventilation will be almost perfect.

The Kansas-Texas Oil Company is constructing a filling station on the corner opposite of the Earlenbaugh Produce house.
January 1941
An extensive remodeling and rearranging program is now in progress at Norlins store. The grocery department is being moved from the rear of the building to the north side where new shelving and display racks of modern design are being built. The new arrangement will give an up to date look.
January 1961
Plans for a Rush County Centennial celebration will be held May 6.
January 1981
The City of McCracken will hold a public meeting to discuss assessments and developments in the waste treatment system.
A New Years party and dinner was held at the home of Larry Edmundson.
